Early History of Grand Isle
During the 1780's, the Spanish had control of the Louisiana Territory. Wanting to colonize their territory, they split the island located south of the state into four sections. One of these sections was the Grand Isle. Grand Isle was owned by Francisco Caminada, who gave it its name. The Grand Isle is separated only by a narrow thread of water at the southern end of Louisiana.
